May 3rd 2010 - #3318 Everyman from May 2nd 2010

Crossword Club VII. All regulars present.
A return after a long Easter break. Missed a lot of crosswords. Did the one from the day before.

Nick: malta, aster, complete, tolerate, a farewell to arms, stalk, retire (7)
Laura: lamentation, remainder, gigantic, one horse (4)
Sam: cutlass, large, awash, partridge, end user, treacle, harlequin, scared, event (9)
Cheating: keep an ear to the ground, alexandra palace (2)

We learnt: There is an ice rink at Alexandra Palace.

We nearly finished and didn't do hardly any cheating. And didn't spend too much time on it. So a good performance all round. Five clues we didn't get. A short playlist is available.

March 24th 2010 - #3311 Everyman from Mar 14th 2010

Crossword Club VI. Apologies: Nick.
Running a week behind on the Everyman. So we did 14th March. Should catch up before Sunday.

Laura: cosiest, bernstein, limbo (3)
Sam: submariner, verne, dirt-cheap, overdue, nelson mandela, save, alexander pope, erratic (8)

We learnt: 'Tar' is a slang word for a sailor.

We did just under half. Slow to start. We looked but couldn't get any. Eventually made quite some progress though. Absolutely no cheating on any of the clues we got though. We also got some bonus ones like: loot/tool, well, clean. Here's our partial solution.

March 8th 2010 - #3258 Everyman from Mar 8th 2009

Crossword Club V. All regular members present.
Having done this weeks Everyman we took one from a year ago.

Nick: irate, reservoir, manana, from head to foot, spectrum (5)
Laura: hot stuff, hashish, omicron (3)
Sam: pile on the agony, cardiff, lazio, height, t s eliot, to boot, resin (7)
Cheating big: esurient (1)

We learnt: 'A sop to cerberus' means a bribe.

We stopped halfway. Just a quick one following on from the big night at IV. As we only cheated once we did quite well. Took around two hours. Our partial solution by Laura.
There's a dedicated playlist for Crossword Club V but we weren't paying much attention to it.

March 7th 2010 - #3310 Everyman from Mar 7th 2010

Fourth meeting of Crossword Club.
New member Warren attended. Ran from before curry until quite some time afterwards.

Nick: colon, arc de triomphe, kildare, tuna, agree to differ, in any case, orioles (7)
Laura: cosmetic surgery, aloof, art dealer, doner kebab, by and large (5)
Sam: red carpet, one day, personal pronoun, untidy, fire escape, rangoon (6)
Warren: pep pill, band (2)
Cheating big: fame, wet blanket, equerry, isle, mediums, empty, bottoms up, petra (8)

We learnt: The currency of Costa Rica is the colon.

Longest Crossword Club ever ending in the early hours. Lots of cheating towards the end but some good solving right up to the final clues too. Sam's poor performance is perhaps explained by him going out for a key part of the solving time. Our solution by everyone.
The playlist wasn't really added to after the Drive By Curry Club

Cheating big: fatigue, gin palace, emcee, tom pearce, sweep, prophecy, glance, eyelet (8)

We nearly finished it ending at 1.20 am. There was only one we couldn't get (16d) - but this was with much help from Jumble towards the end. Our attempt by Nick.
We were not overly impressed with it this week... probably because we didn't understand some answers.
This weeks playlist includes lots of Damien Rice.

February 7th 2010 - #3245 Everyman from Feb 8th 2009

Sam, Nick & Laura form Crossword Club.
That Sunday's Everyman had been done earlier in the day - so look at an old puzzle from the archive.

4d. Rio de Janeiro became the first answer ever with an appropriate celebration.
19d. El Paso became an extraordinary mystery for "UK group steps in in US city(2,4)". Explanation from AnswerBank: "Is group ELO with pas (steps inside)".
Other slightly memorable answers: 14a. Nature trail, 10a. Lorraine, 11d. North Shields, 15d. Rowan tree, 20d. Castle.
We kicked ourselves when we found out: 22a. In reserve.

We learnt: A rowan tree is also known as a mountain ash tree.

We did about half. And we also looked at the surrounding Everymans - #3253 and #3255.
We share a playlist with a local curry club. Artist of the week: Jack Johnson.
